Inspire The Next Generation Of Scientists! - Organizers

Call for Lead Facilitators/Organizers

Want to give back to the community, gain leadership skills, practice professionalism, and gain mentoring experience to help build your self-efficacy in STEM? Then, this is the outreach event for you!

You’ll work as a team to design and facilitate a Science Day at Montezuma Elementary and Wherry Elementary. Both events will be identical in content. Yadéeh Sawyer will do regular check-ins on progress and will be available to assist as needed.

The pre-event training with Explora will prepare you for the event. Prior experience with science or teaching is not required.

See “MORE DETAILS” for more information about this event.

REGISTRATION

In addition to registering through stemuniversity.edu, please complete this Google form: https://goo.gl/forms/5RH4kXDSzEIsbTsl1

Most of this event is behind the scenes and will be coordinated and scheduled as your team decides. For the day of the event, if you have classes, no problem. See “MORE DETAILS” below for how this can still be an event for you.

If you are only interested in the development of the event, this event is still for you. There will be two identical events, one at Montezuma Elementary School on March 28 from 8 – 12:30, and one at Wherry Elementary School in early April, exact date and time TBD. You can participate to the extent you would like, as you will indicate on this Google Form:  https://goo.gl/forms/5RH4kXDSzEIsbTsl1.

You are required to attend one training session, not both. If you are unable to attend either, please contact Yadéeh at yadeeh@unm.edu for alternative training. Please indicate your preferred training session on the Google form (https://goo.gl/forms/5RH4kXDSzEIsbTsl1).

MORE DETAILS

This event is in partnership with Explora and 12 Months of Math.

  • For both events, we will provide transportation in shifts, but students are welcome to use their own mode of transportation.
  • For the day of the Montezuma event, if you cannot attend the entire event, that is ok. Students can work in shifts if necessary. Please indicate in the Google Form (https://goo.gl/forms/5RH4kXDSzEIsbTsl1) which time frame you are able to assist on the day of the event.
  • The March 28th event is for the Dual Language classes (K-5) at Montezuma Elementary, a Title 1 school on Indian School and Girard; https://montezuma-aps-nm.schoolloop.com/.
  • The Wherry event will be for classes whose teachers participated in a series of Mathematical Mindsets workshops.
  • The aim of the event is for elementary students to see science demonstrations and to participate in hands-on activities.
  • There will be five 15 minute stations.
  • We will have students to fill 2 roles:
  • o   This registration - Organizers - students to volunteer to design the day - including which activities and demonstrations will be presented and to help with recruiting volunteer facilitators for the events. Support and training are provided. After registration is closed, all lead organizers will be put in touch with each other. Roles within leadership will be chosen within the group.
  • o   Facilitators - students to help lead each of the activities/demonstrations
  • All UNM student participants will receive an “Ask Me About STEM” shirt.
  • As a thank you, all UNM student participants will be invited for a behind-the-scenes tour of Explora.
